Finished my taxes and I am exhausted, so here's something for you to practice with: Freddie Hubbard's solo on Stolen Moments, from Oliver Nelson's Blues And The Abstract Truth. At 111 bpm, it's a good introductory tempo for that jazz drill I posted a few weeks ago.

This is a great tune, and I find playing brushes tricky. Should the left hand play quarter notes, or half time, while the right hand plays the jazz ride pattern on the sd ?
I often play the left hand the latter way as find stirring the pot in 8th notes gives a more staccato feel, where as half time in the left feels more legato.
Apologies if the above sounds stupid and thanks in advance for any pointers.
Hard to say-- my feeling about brushes is that you if just play long enough you'll find a motion for it. I don't mean years, I mean if you play that track for 15 minutes every day for a week, you'll start to find a motion for it. All of the swing brush techniques are very natural for that type of music-- it's hard not to do them if you just do it for a long time.
