Podcast episode 7: weekly listening — spooky

Hey, it was fun putting together that last little podcast, so I thought I'd try to do a regular listening thing. At least until I use up the free storage, and the Podomatic people try to make me upgrade to a paid account, which should happen in a couple of weeks now.  I'm not trying to make any kind of lesson out of this, or to be especially drummy in my choices; I just picked a variety of nice pieces of art.

Today we've got Afrobeat legend Tony Allen, Jack Dejohnette, Sly Dunbar on a pretty spaced-out bit of dub, a couple of Moroccan pieces, Thelonious Monk, Joey Baron, and a couple of other things.

Once again, you can listen to this with the embedded player, or at the Podomatic site, or you can download the mp3.

Track list after the break:

Tony Allen — Progress / drums by Tony Allen

Picture 1
Jack Dejohnette — Pictures / drums by Jack Dejohnette

Dub Driver
Tapper Zukie — Escape From Hell / drums by Sly Dunbar

Friday the 13th
Thelonious Monk — Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins / drums by Willie Jones, Jr.

Mohamed Diha Utalla Fiha
The Master Musicians of Jujouka — Apocalypse Across The Sky

Hamasha Hamdushi
The Gnoua Brotherhood of Marrakesh — Sufi - Moroccan Trance II

John Zorn — O'o / drums by Joey Baron

Variation On The Misery
Gil Evans — Blues In Orbit / drums by Elvin Jones / percussion by Sue Evans and Donald McDonald

Bola Beat
Bola Sete — Shebaba / drums by Ronald Mesquita
It's worth noting that with this track we have a Brazilian drummer playing the baiao feel with the “wrong” bass drum pattern, according to our recent discussion on northern Brazilian drumming; draw what lesson you will from that.
