Quick takes

- Jon McCaslin @ Four on the Floor shares this video of Marvin "Bugalu" Smith, who I had actually not heard of before. He was in Sun Ra's and Archie Shepp's bands in the 80's.

Truth be told, "BETTER THAN HOLLYWOOD” series 115 the master sessions by Marvin Smith part I. from Marvin Bugalu Smith on Vimeo.

There are a ton- like hundreds- more videos of Smith at his vimeo channel.

More selections from neighboring blogs after the break:

- My man Ken Marino talks about Stone's Accents and Rebounds, and about studying with Joe Morello:

- Via Trap'd, here fellow drummer, Origin recording artist, teacher, writer, and photographer Steve Korn explains his own hybrid rudiment:

- Last but not least, writer and scholar Larry Appelbaum does a Before and After listening session with Sonny Rollins:

[re: Paul Motian trio w/Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell- I Got Rhythm from Broadway, vol. 2]:
Is that it? OK, interesting having the drums close out the piece. That’s unusual. I like the unexpected, so that’s nice. Who it is, I don’t know. They’re all proficient musicians.

What do you like about it, aside from the proficiency?

Proficiency is a big thing, man. It’s interesting the way they ended it. That style of drumming, you could feel he was like playing a horn or something, so that’s great.
